Ye'kwana Wuwa Basket with monkey design, extra finely woven (black red and natural).   Hand-woven by Maira Rodriguez, Kanwasumi/Medewa Cooperatives, Venezuela, 7-1/4" diameter at top x 7" height. Comes with information sheet describing the Ye'kwana Culture and their lowland forest environment.
 
The hour-glass shape of this basket is influenced by the extra large woman's burden basket used to carry up to 90 pounds of firewood and yuca roots in a similarly-shaped basket that she carries on her back with a fiber band across her forehead.  See photos in the Ye'kwana artisan section.
